At least 7000 years, and probably longer than that. By 4000 B.C.E. (6000 years ago) copper crafting had reached a high level in Iran, Mesopotamia and Egypt, and there is evidence that working copper could date back to the beginning of the neolithic (aprox 9500 B.C.E.) in those areas.
