∙ 14y agoUntil a new President is inaugurated (January 20th following an election, at noon). Under the terms of the 22th Amendment (ratified 1951), a President can serve a maximum of 10 years in office, if he serves the final two years of the term of an elected President. If he serves more than 2 years, he is only eligible for a single re-elected term of four years. *The 22nd Amendment would have prevented Grover Cleveland from a 3rd, even non-consecutive term as well as restricting FDR and all 2-term Presidents from a third term. It would not prevent the unprecedented occurrence of succession by a previous President should he assume a lesser office within the Presidential line of succession.
