A NYS driver's license is good for 8 years. There is an issue date and an expiration date shown on the front. If you are under 21, when you turn 21 you will get a new license without the "under 21" code on it (for ID purposes).

Also, you can renew your license up to a year before it expires, or up to 2 years (I think) AFTER it expires. After that, you have to take the test again.

Is it illegal to have multiple driver's licenses?

I would imagine so. In order to get a new one, you have to turn in the old one or report it lost or stolen. The license is the property of the state.Technically, you can have more than one driver's license. If you apply for an International Driver's License, it works in the USA and other countries. You do not need to turn in your state license when you get the International Driver's License.Added: (in the US) If you are a US citizen You may possess only one state-issued drivers license, and it must be issued by the state in which you have your legal residence. In reference to the first answer: In the US, the 'international drivers license' referred toabove, does NOT take the place of a valid US drivers license, it is valid only when presented in foreigncountries.

Can a person living in new york who is on h4 visa without SSN but has ITIN get driving license?

Individuals in certain categories can apply for driver's license without having SSN, such as those with student visas, etc. Since you are on H-4, you can obtain driver's license. Bring your passport, copy and original of your spouse's passport (with H1-B) to DMV. You will have to pass written exam and driving test like everybody. The license will be a issued up to the term of H1-B. The other choice is in case you have valid driver's license from your home country, you can add your name as a driver in the insurance of that vehicle. You can drive with foreign driver's license as long as you have insurance. Look in DMV manual page 3.
