The length of training would depend on whether or not the person has had any experience in the pharmaceutical industry (e.g. if the person went to college for pharmaceutical studies). However, if it is an entry level job and the recruit has no experience, it might take about two or three weeks before the pharmacy assistant is left alone to work - though this may vary depending on the scope of the work. Obviously, trust must be established as pharmacy assistants have access to expensive and dangerous drugs.

While it may only take a few weeks to learn the basics, a pharmacy assistant's training never really stops: he or she is always learning more. This is attributable to the rapid growth and constant changes of the pharmaceutical industry.

(I worked as a part-time pharmacy assistant for 16 months. I handled narcotics, sorted paperwork, prepared retail prescriptions, and prepared prescriptions for delivery to nursing homes.)
