Kits are totally dependent on their mother for the first four to six weeks, although the kits will began eating softened food from about three weeks. At 10 days of age, a kit gets its milking teeth, which are its first set of teeth. A kit`s canine teeth, appear at 6 weeks or older. Weaning is from six to eight weeks. Kits are mature enough to leave their mother at eight weeks.

From another contributor:

Well, when i raised my ferret kits i gave them water-softened hard food around 4 weeks of age and then around 6 weeks started giving them unsoftened food.

Can you take the baby ferrets out of the cage and then put them back with the mother?

Baby ferrets should not be disturbed or handled by humans for about the first week, because a Jill may feel threatened and might cannibalize her babies Are the baby ferrets are old enough to be without their mother (weaned and eating solid foods), then there shouldn't be any problem putting them back with the mother.

What is dangerous for a ferret to eat?

Ferrets are carnivores and so should only be fed raw meat, eggs and special ferret pet food. Cat/ kitten or dog / puppy foods are not suitable as they contain too much plant matter. Ferrets are unable to digest fruit and vegetables and eating these can cause stomach problems or in more severe cases intestinal blockages. Foods which are high in sugar should also be avoided as ferrets can develop diabetes. Another thing to avoid is dairy. Dairy products are known to cause stomach upsets such as vomiting and diarrhea when eaten by ferrets.

Is it okay to give ferrets milk?

Ferrets are lactose intolerant and cannot digest any dairy products. Dairy products such as milk can cause loose stools or diarrhea in ferrets. Advise from another contributor: we have five ferrets and have done quite a bit of research over the years, and i read on a few occasions that ferrets are lactose intolerant and therefore it is not good to give them milk as it can give them diarrhea. we also learned this as we gave one a small amount of milk and he had diarrhea. poor little thing.
