The schooling to be an orthopedic surgeon is quite long. It begins with 4 years of undergrad work, followed by 4 years of medical school. You will then be required to complete at least 2 years of training in surgery and a residency.
In the Unites States it requires usually (but not always) 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, and at least 5 years of residency - so usually 13 years after high school.
Many orthopedists then do more training, called a fellowship, in a more specific area such as the spine or the hand.
In other countries the training may vary somewhat but is usually fairly similar.
Generally at least thirteen years; four years of college, four of medical school, five of specialty training and potentially even more to subspecialize.
It takes approximately 14 years, minimum. It's a hard career, but very rewarding afterwards.
