There were four different species of Stegosaurus. The largest was Stegosaurus armatus, which grew to be 30 feet long and weighed 5.5 tons. Stegosaurus longispinus and Stegosaurus stenops both grew to be about 23 feet long.
Most stegosaurs had 16 long spines on their tails, back, and shoulders. Stegosaurus is unusual for a stegosaur, because it only has four spines on its tail.

All stegosaurs were herbivorous. Remember that Brontosaurus itself did not exist. It was erroneously constructed from sauropod pieces of different genera. All existent sauropods however were herbivorous.
Stegosaurs typically had between 30 to 40 teeth. These teeth were not suited for chewing but were designed for stripping leaves and vegetation, as they primarily fed on plants. Their teeth were flat and peg-like, ideal for their herbivorous diet.
Stegosaurus had bony plates on its back and tail.
