at least until midnight on the same day - there are usually two masses which run on ash wednesday, 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening.

it is custom to try (as best as possible) to avoid washing one's face after the priest has given the ashes to you. this is because the ashes have been blessed and are a symbol of faith.

they should be kept in place at the very least, until midnight.
