That strongly depends on the species. The embryonic stage (egg) takes at least several days to weeks. The larval stage (free swimming larva) takes a few months to sometimes over a year. The adult life span latst from 7-10 years (average), some species can reach an age of more than 20 years.

Some salamanders dont have an external egg and larval stage (live-bearing) or there is little difference in the larvela stage compared tot the adult stage (neotene). In these species it is hard to tell the different stages.

There are over 400 species of salamanders known worldwide. Salamander species vary in size from 3.9 cm to 180 cm. The life span of some of the smaller species may vary from one year up. Salamander species have different life cycles, some breed, lay their eggs and hatch on land, while others breed, and lay eggs in the water.

One example of the life cycle is the Tiger Salamander. They lay their eggs in April or may. It takes about 20 days for them to hatch. After about 60 days from hatching the young adults leave the pond. It can take up to 400 days to go from egg to adult shape.

Some salamanders take more than one summer to mature. They will stay in the pond over the winter and then mature the following summer.

That all depends on the breed of salamander. Some have been known to live up to 50 years. But on average they live for about 8-10 years.

When do salamanders come out of the woods and head for bodies of water?

Salamanders, unlike lizards, require water and moisture for all aspects of their life cycle. If the amount of rain has left pools of water that will remain through the Summer, many will not have to seek the long trek to ponds, streams and lakes outside of their wooded areas. It is all a matter of procreation and food, as with all amphibians.
