There is no set term of office. According to the Constitution, "The Judges, both of the supreme and inferior Courts, shall hold their Offices during good Behaviour," which means that they are appointed for life, until they voluntarily retire, or die, or are impeached. No Supreme Court justice has ever been impeached; some retire, but more die in office.

There are proposals that SC justices should be appointed to fixed terms; this would require a Constitutional amendment, of course. The most common suggestion is for each Justice to serve for 18 years; with the current SC of 9 justices (this number can be changed by Congress) this would bring one retirement and one new justice every 2 years.
