Eight to ten millimeters (0.3 to 0.4 inches) is the length of an adult ladybug. The insect in question (Coccinellidae family) may vary considerably in color, length, ornamentation (spots), and width according to species. But the show always be an attractively rounded shape in which the longest length approximates the widest width and vice versa.

Ladybug eggs hatch in about 5 to 8 days, then the larva feed on aphids for between 3 and 7 weeks (depending on the species). They undergo metamorphosis in the pupal stage for another week before emerging as winged adults. Most ladybugs live about a year, but some live longer, undergoing a hibernation stage called diapause for up to 9 months when there is colder weather.
