12 years and a month or so. He served 3 full elected terms, and then was elected to a fourth term. Unfortunately, he died a month into his term, only days before Germany would surrender and effectively end WWII.

He had 4 terms of 4 years each. He was the 32nd president, serving from march 4, 1933- April 12, 1945. Hoover preceded him, and Truman (once fdr's vp) succeeded him.
