Midway was a battle in June, 1942, during WWII, between the Japanese and American Navies. World War Two lasted from 1939-45, but the US was not involved until 1941.
The USS Midway is an American aircraft carrier named for the battle. It was finished about a week before the end of WWII, so it saw no action in WWII. But it did see lots of action in Korea and Vietnam. It was updated and modernized, and fitted with an angled flight deck, like the current carriers. The Midway and its sister ship the Coral Sea, were active Navy ships for more than forty-five years, being retired in the early 1990s.
