Typically, most of the people that worked in the mills were women and children. The average work day was 12-14 hours. Children would get paid about 30 cents a week. By 1844 workers were demanding better conditions. a popular slogan was "Eight hours for work, Eight hours for sleep, and Eight hours for Brethren."
