They left after the season due to failed contract negotiations on the acting side of things. Chad and Hilarie were willing to come back (Hilarie more than Chad), but both apparently wanted too much of a raise to continue on with the show. Chad decided to pursue his film career, so they left "Peyton" out too since they both were needed to continue together. As a result, the producers worked it all into the next season by having it mentioned throughout some episodes that they left Tree Hill to travel. Many fans stopped watching in response to the major story being originally about the relationship between Lucas and Peyton. When they disappeared the show took an awkward turn and never truly recovered.
