What is the difference between coal and flint?

Coal is Black and shiny, and will sheer easily. It is a mixture of many different organic compounds. Found/mined in specific minefields in the UK. Flint is white/colourless and does not sheer easily(very hard). It is only one compound. sand (silicon dioxide) or possibly other crystalline solids held in the flint chemical lattice. It is found mainly in the clay vales of Southern England.

How is coal created?

I agree with your correspondent 'Wiki User'. Coal is being formed today. Its first stage is peat formation, found on moorlands in the UK. As more material lies over it, it becomes compressed and begins to fry out. At this stage it is lignite. Continued compression changes the lignite into coal, a black bright shiny carboniferous rock. Continued compression the coal becomes anthracite. A very hard bright coal, that burns with a hot flame.

What was hydrogen gas used for in the past?

In the UK, in the days before North Sea gas, gasworks used to make what was called 'town gas' from coal and air. The products were coke (coal with tar and other things removed by the heat in the process) and this 'town gas' which consisted mainly of hydrogen. It was piped to houses to use in their gas cookers. Problem was that there was also a significant amount of carbon monoxide in it as well (which was flammable, as was the hydrogen). But this made it dangerous to breath and many people committed suicide by putting their head in a gas oven without lighting it. To make it less of a problem the gasworks put in another gas which made it smell and so it was more likely that you'd know if there was a gas leak.
