around 4-6 months because a human is 20 times larger than a scarab beetle and a beetle doesnt eat alot...
It is not dirt that it roles it is animal dung. Hence it is called "The Dung Beetle" it may also be call a Scarab Beetle. The dung ball is buried in the ground and used as a food source for the beetle's young which emerges a long time later. This has resonance with the entombment of a mummy and its afterlife - hence the Scarab was sacred to the ancient Egyptians.
Scarab Beetles grow up to half an inch.
The name scarab is a nice name for a dung beetle! They hang out in the desert and look for piles of animal poo, which they make into large balls to lay their eggs in. The ancient Egyptians saw them rolling the balls of poo around (they bury them somewhere convenient so the eggs can hatch and the larva eat the dung) and thought that might be the same way the Sun moved across the sky. The scarab then became symbolic of how the Sun moved from East to West, and is why they beetles are often protrayed in Egyptian art with a sun disc close to them. I think there is also some further symbolism about keeping secrets, but hopefully someone else can answer that.

To catch the elusive dung beetle you have to wait until mid to late December --- when it snows long enough for snow to stay on the ground, snowballs will appear occasionally --- If you see a snowball rolling, this means a dung beetle is rolling it! Sneak up on it and use your net to catch the bug - go slow... if the beetle flies away then walk into a building and come out and then find another snowball and start over.
