How many manned Mercury Space Shuttle missions were there?

None. We have not had a manned mission to Mercury yet. The space shuttle would be unable to make that type of trip.

What will replace the space shuttles?

The Constellation program will take over from the space shuttle. See the link below. The Space Shuttle will be replaced by the Ares rocket system. The Ares heavy-lift rocket has a bigger payload than the Shuttle, the Shuttle can lift about 22 tons into low earth orbit, the Ares can lift 188 tons in low earth orbit. The Ares payload bay is three times larger than the Shuttle's. Old-style rockets and splashdown recoveries might not be as cool as the Shuttle, but they're cheaper and can actually do more.As of this writing (December 2010) the three remaining Space Shuttles are scheduled to be retired shortly. For the past few years, the US NASA (National Aeronautical and Space Administration) has been planning a new manned-spaceflight system called Orion/Ares. Orion is the manned segment (like Apollo) and Ares is the launch vehicle (like Saturn).Very recently this fall, NASA has indicated that it may scrap plans for Orion/Ares.This would leave the US space program without its own manned space flight program. There are no more servicing missions to Hubble scheduled, so the need for manned flight is somewhat arbitrary at this point -- as there are only fleeting thoughts of returning to the Moon, or going to Mars with manned flight.Future US manned flight to, say the International Space Station, would be accomplished via Russian launch and manned flight systems.

Why hasn't there been anymore manned space flights?

It may not be very far into space, but the space lab is in space, and every time they launch the shuttle it's a manned space flight. As to why not more ... it's expensive and dangerous, and congress would rather spend money building a bridge to nowhere.

When was the space shuttle invented?

The space shuttle program was initiated on January 5, 1972 with President Nixon's announcement that NASA would begin development on a manned reusable space shuttle system. The first complete orbiter, Enterprise, was completed on September 17, 1976. The first fully functional space shuttle, Columbia, was delivered to the Kennedy Space Center on March 25, 1979. Columbia's first launch was on April 12, 1981.

How long would it take the space shuttle to fly 14.5 billion light years?

It never could.

How long would it take to travel to the closest star using a space shuttle?

8.31 minutes @ the speed of light.

How long would it take to get to Pluto from Mercury?

It depends what spped you travel at ! If you travelled at the speed of light it would take .... If you travelled as fast as a shuttle it would take.....

How long would it take a shuttle to travel 28.1 light years if its traveling at 18000mph?

About 9,177,187,388 hours (1,047,624.13 years)

How long would it take to travel 4 light years in a space shuttle?

Depends on how fast the shuttle was going. If it was traveling the speed of light, then only four years. The averal orbital velocity of the space shuttle is 17,000 - 18,000 mph. So let's see... Light travels at 186,000 miles per second, 3600 seconds in an hour, 24 hours in a day, 365.25 days in a year. So light travels 5,869,713,600,000 miles in a year In four years it would travel 23,478,854,400,000 miles. It would take the Space shuttle traveling an average of 18,000 mph 1,304,380,800 hours to reach that distance, which is 54,349,200 days or 148,800 years

How long would it take to go 9.461 light years at average rocketship speed?

The maximum speed of the shuttle is 17,500 mphTherefore to cover 9.461 light years would take about 36,000 years

How would it take to travel the distance of a light-year in a space shuttle?

Depends on how much thrust you give the shuttle. Assuming the shuttle leaves earth at escape velocity (11.2 km/s) then: 1 ly= 9,460,730,472,580.8 km divide 1 ly by the velocity: 844,708,077,909 seconds or 26767.7555 years
