There are several schools. An accelerated diploma school takes two years but very intense. There is a three year school usually sponsored by a hospital and one receives a diploma. Then there is a two year Associate's degree requiring two years of college likely at a community college. Last is a four year colege with a B.S. degree in nursing. With each program, one must pass the State Board of Nursing exam to become a licensed R. N. in each state.

There are three options to become a registered nurse as follows.

  • diploma program (typically three years, not recommended for individuals who do not have an already existing degree)
  • associate degree (two years as a full-time student once the student starts the professional phase of the program)
  • bachelor's degree (BSN) (four years as a full-time student)
