Very loud howl. It can get very annoying at times, but generally will just make you laugh. I have a 2 year old beagle and he howls when strangers approach the yard. Not aggressive, just an awesome alarm.

I down loaded a decibel meter on my smartphone and recorded our beagle's bark from five feet away at 100 decibels. In a confined space like a stairwell or a car I think it may go as high as 105 db because of the way it make my ears ring for a day or two afterward. This falls in the range of extreme noise and can possibly damage one's hearing. The app is SoundCheck by Starkey and it measures noise through the microphone on portable devices.

If the noise is too loud for you then it is too loud for your dog. It seems as if high pitched noises bother them more than it does us, such as a phone ringing or a whistle being blown or music.
