It has to be about 2 qts. low for the light to come on.
If the oil light is on it is seriously low and is probably more than 2 quarts low. Check the level and add until it is full. You now know how low it was.
The light will come on when it is 1.5 quarts low in a hard turn or going up a hill. It will come on when it is 2 quarts low traveling normally. Why not just check the oil level regularly and not depend on a light telling you it is low?

The light is NOT a low oil light. It is a low OIL PRESSURE light. You can drive it until the engine seizes. Of course internal engine damage will start to occur as soon as the light comes on and you have no oil pressure if you continue to drive the vehicle.
