Unlike some other battles, Passchendaele had a few hidden dangers. This included many hidden positions on both sides. Along side that, there was mud, in which many soldiers drowned. Heavy artillery also remained a constant, firing down on troops, causing casualties. Because of the heavy mud, troops where slowed down during an advance or "Trip to No-Man's-Land", making them vunerable to machine gun and rifle fire. Hope that helps
It:s not a country. but how about Dead man"s stroll by the US Marine Band-who sustained heavy casualties ( Marines, not the bandsmen) in this Pacific theatre battle!
In American history, it would be the Battle of Gettysburg (46,286 killed, wounded, captured, or missing,) in the American Civil War, but in all of history is left to exaggerated claims and battles from several thousand years ago. For example, Herodotus claims that there were 257,000 casualties at the Battle of Plataea, but modern historians say that the number couldn't have been more than 51,500. Likewise, the Battle of Kalinga claims to have resulted in 1,000,000 casualties, but modern historians estimate no more than 100,000. In recent history it was probably the Somme with over 1,000,000 casualties, however this "battle" lasted for about 8 months and is more of a campaign than a single battle. The bloodiest siege in history was almost certainly the Siege of Leningrad, which lasted about 29 months, but resulted in between 1,117,000 and 4,500,000 casualties.
He was the Japanese Naval officer who disobeyed General Yamashita's command to evacuate Manila once US forces arrived and ordered his men to garrison themselves in Manila and defend Mailla city to the last man. The ensuing battle cost over 100,000 civilian casualties as well as over 6,000 American casualites. Iwabuchi's entire garrison was wiped out but they brutally fought to the last man and took out their anger and frustration by murdering and torturing civilians during the month long defense.
Since 1945, the number of civilian deaths resulting from conflicts, wars, and related violence is estimated to be in the millions. Exact figures vary widely depending on the source and the criteria used to define civilian deaths. Major conflicts, such as the Vietnam War, the Korean War, and more recent conflicts in the Middle East, have contributed significantly to these numbers. Overall, it is difficult to provide an exact total, but estimates suggest that civilian casualties could be as high as 20-30 million or more since 1945.

The Battle of Shiloh created a huge number of casualties for both sides. The Confederate killed, wounded and missing came to 10, 609 troops. On the Union side total casualties came to 13,047. Northern critics were hard on General Grant. Some wanted his removal. Reportedly, President Lincoln defended him as a man who could fight. This was not sound reasoning. Grant had escaped losing the battle by pure luck. Irregardless of Lincoln, Grant's supervising general, Henry Halleck took charge of Grant's army and followed the Rebels to Corinth Mississippi. Only when Halleck was promoted to general in chief, did Grant have his army returned to him.
