No, they did not. Many aircraft were built and tested and some even flown short distances before the Wright brother's flight.
Never heard of that, and I know many, many aircraft.
1903 was the year that the Wright brothers successfully flew their airplane.However, many men had built and flown aircraft for short flights for years before this. Aircraft developed gradually, bit by bit with many errors and crashes. There was NO single "invention" of the airplane.

A Cesna 172 with a full tank of gas can fly upwards of 6 to 7 hours if flown at higher altitude. The plane uses less fuel at higher altitude and thus can go further. If flown faster at lower altitude, it won't go far at all.
