General officers (1- to 4-star) command brigades or larger units. A 4-star general (5-star during wartime) commands the entire US Army.
Approval has been granted to add some more brigades to the Army.
Currently the US Army has ten divisions. 1st Armored, 1st Cavalry, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Infantry, 10th Mountain, 25th Infantry and the 82nd and 101st Airborne. And there are five independent brigades.
The army is considered a singular branch of the armed forces. Because of this, there are no branches of the army, it is broken up into different corps, divisions, brigades and battalions.
In the US Army in WW2, the typical Infantry Division contained 3 Regiments. There were no Brigades. Each Regiment consisted of 12 infantry companies that were formed into 3 Battalions. During WW1, the US Infantry Division had 4 Regiments divided into 2 Brigades.
Buckskin Brigades has 312 pages.
Aswer: 15+ A quote from an article by Nancy A. Youssef and Renee Schoof | McClatchy Newspapers on September 12, 2007 would seem to indicate there are problbly 15 to slightly more than 15 combat brigades in Iraq as of April 8, 2008. "In his testimony, Petraeus called for five of the 20 combat brigades in Iraq to leave by next July, bringing the number of brigades down to pre-surge levels of 15 combat brigades. He didn't say how the remaining 15 brigades would translate into troop numbers."
