In the early morning of December 10, 1949, Communist troops laid siege to Chengdu, the last Kuomintang (Nationalist chinese) controlled city in mainland China, where Chiang Kai-shek and his son Chiang Ching-kuo directed the defense at the Chengdu Central Military Academy. The Nationalist Army, led by Chiang Kai-shek, was forced to flee to Taiwan following the Chinese Civil War against the Communist forces led by Mao Zedong. This retreat happened in 1949, and the Nationalist government established the Republic of China on the island.
