The potato famine in Ireland began in 1845 and ended in 1849. During that period of famine, approximately 750,000 Irish people sought a new life in North America. Some, based on British incentives settled in Canada, most however, came to the US. The cities of New York and Boston became their homes. In those cities many of them became dock hands and factory workers.
