Jamestown was an English settlement. A fort was constructed and used as a defense against the Powhatan Indians. Unfortunately many of the settlers died because of a lack of clean water and no food.
There were many problems in Jamestown after the settlers arrived. Many of the original settlers died from starvation and various diseases. They also had to combat angry Native American Indians who didn't want them on their land.
The people who helped establish Jamestown were English settlers including Captain Christopher Newport and Captain Edward Wingfield. Many of the settlers died during the first winter at Jamestown.
