∙ 13y agoThe six million figure is based on Rudolf Hoss' testimony during his trial. He was the first commandant of Auschwitz, but did not serve there after 1943. His figure was not based on statistics, just his estimate at the time. 4.5 million is probably closer to the truth.

Some confusion there. The figure of six million was originally based on testimony given at Nuremberg by Hoettl (not Hoess). Hoettl got the figures from Eichmann, who was a senior administrator and well informed. Eichmann repeated the figure in his own trial.
All serious recent research has pointed to a figure of about 5.7-6.2 million.
