Here's the breakdown for you: 8 bits make a byte 1000 bytes make a KiloByte (KB) 1000 Kilobytes makes a MegaByte (10,000 KB/1 million bits) 1000 MegaBytes makes a Gigabyte (100,000 KB/1 billion bits) so 100,000 KB makes a Gigabyte... Hope this helps

computers work in binary counts where each position of the count is either on or off normally represented as 0 or 1 respectively.

The smallest unit of information or data is a bit which represents a single on/off status. By combining these statuses together you can create larger data blocks. The first gouping is normally 8 bits which is known as a byte.

10101010 is 8 bits which is the equivalent of 1 byte, which is typically required to store a singe alphabtic character (the Chinese symbolic languas cannot be represented in a single 8 bits and require 16 bits, which is why they are known as double-byte character sets.

because we are using binary, every time we add another bit to the string, we can double the number of combinations we can hold.

1 bit = 2 combinations (0 or 1)

2 bits = 4 combination (00, 01, 10, 11)

etc..

if you follow this doubleing pattern we get

bits 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192

bytes 0, 0, 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024 (note I have not bothered with the fractional bytes)

As 1024 is pretty close to a round 1000 with was prefixed with Kilo so you get kilobit and kilobyte. A kilobit is 128 bytes. A kilobyte is 8192 bits.

Mega is a thousand thousand (i.e. a million) so a Megabyte is 8 million bits (slightly more bacause we have rounded down from 1024 to 1000) or 1024 kilobytes

Giga is a thousand million so a Gigabyte is 8000 million bits (slightly more bacause we have rounded down from 1024 to 1000) or 1024 Megabytes or 1 million Kilobytes

if your PC has a 250 Gig hard drive then it could store 250 thousand million (250,000,000,000) characters of information provided you could use all that space.

So the short answer is

Kb = 1024 bytes

Mb = 1024 Kb

Gb = 1024 Mb

Tb (terrabytes) = 1024 Gb - that's a lot of data!
