A PC's RAM memory (usually measured in megabytes (Mb) or gigabytes (Gb)) is its staging area. Let's say that you want to call up Microsoft Word (referred to as an "Application") to create or update a document. Unbeknown to you, Windows gathers all the necessary Word program files from the hard disk and places them into RAM memory, which is an electronic component that is much faster than executing an application directly from the hard disk which is a mechanical component. A minimum or 256 Mb of RAM memory is required to run application programs such as 2007 Microsoft Office that contains a word processor called Microsoft Word. While you'll get by with 256 Mb of RAM memory, you're PC will perform quite slowly when running an application such as 2007 Microsoft Office that is very demanding on PC system resources. I would recommend having at least 512 Mb or higher of RAM memory in order to run must current day PC applications.
