12 Generals have been President of the United States. George Washington, Andrew Jackson, William Henry Harrison, Zachary Taylor, Franklin Pierce, Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, Chester A. Arthur, Benjamin Harrison, and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Only Taylor, Grant and Eisenhower was professional soldiers. The others only served in wartime.

Johnson and Arthur had the rank of general but did not conduct any military operations.
