We had a Pope, Pope Gregory XII, who resigned in 1417 to end the Great Schism. In 1294 a hermit-monk named Pietro Angelerio was elected, he was only pope under the name Celestine V for five months, when he resigned. He was a favorite of Pope Benedict's who prayed at his tomb often, and left his pallium there on Celestine's tomb right after his election to the chair of Peter.
