The Supreme Court of Missouri comprises seven justices, each of whom gets a two-year rotation as Chief Justice, decided in order of seniority. The current Chief Justice is William Ray Price, whose term began July 1, 2009.
Selection for office is made via the "Missouri Plan," in which the Appellate Judicial Committee provides the Governor with the names of three approved candidates from which to select his or her nominee. If the Governor fails to nominate a candidate, the Committee, itself, makes the appointment.
After a year's service, the new justice runs unopposed on a general election ballot. If the voters approve his or her confirmation, the justice then serves a 12-year term.
Technically, only one. Only the Chief Justice of the Missouri Supreme Court is referred to as a justice; the other six are called Supreme Court Judges. The state Court has seated a total of seven judges/justices since 1890.
Under the Missouri Plan, the Governor or a special selection committee appoints judges to a one-year term. At the end of the year, the judge must run on a non-partisan ticket in the general election to retain his or her seat. If voters approve, the judge is elected to a 12-year term, and is eligible to run for recommission at the end of the term.
The Chief Justice position rotates on a two-year basis, and is selected by the judges from their peers on the Court.
