How many Gulf War veterans are still alive?

The first gulf war was fought in 1990-1991. A total of 700,000 US soldiers participated in 'Operation Desert Storm'. Considering the fact that only 294 US soldiers died during the conflict and the average life expectancy in USA is 78 years , it can be safely said that a majority of Iraq War veterans are still alive. However, there exists no database to indicate the exact number of surviving veterans of Iraq war.

How were the vetrans of the Persian gulf war treated after coming home?

I cannot speak as to all the countries involved, only about the US. Unlike Vietnam or the current war in Iraq, the Persian Gulf War was a short and glorious war which achieved its objective. The veterans received a heroes' welcome, but there were problems with those suffering from medical problems of "Gulf War Syndrome" in getting the help they needed according to the news media. Also, I have heard of some who wanted to remain in uniform after the war, but they were discharged and told to walk as the US military resumed the downsizing it began following the end of the Cold War. I also heard about one veteran who came through the war unscathed but was murdered in his own neighborhood after he arrived home. The experience was certainly different for everyone, but the Persian Gulf War veterans I have spoken with seemed to have adjusted much better than the Vietnam veterans.
