Aftershocks are smaller earthquakes that occur after a larger earthquake in the same area. They are a result of the earths crust near the fault rupture readjusting as a result of the main earthquake (also known as the "main shock").

It is said there was thousands of aftershocks after the 1994 Northridge earthqauke about 30 km east of LA (Los Angeles). A 5.9 aftershock occured almost one minute after the original earthquake. About 11 hours later another one occured.
The US Geological survey report that (as of the 5th of February, 2010) there have been 59 aftershocks of magnitude 4.5 or greater. Sixteen of which had magnitudes of 5.0 or above. The two largest aftershocks had a magnitude of 6.0 and 5.9. The magnitude 6.0 aftershock occurred 7 minutes after the main earthquake on the 12th of January and the magnitude 5.9 aftershock occurred at 11:03 GMT on the 20th of January. These smaller earthquakes are called aftershocks. Aftershocks can often be as strong as the earthquake its self and there can be many.
Chile lies on the boundry of two techtonic plates, the South American plate and the Nazca plate. It has experienced many earthquakes. The two most notable are the 1960 Great Chilean earthquake also know as the Valdivia earthquake. It was the largest earthquake ever measured and recorded. It was also the location for the 5th largest recorded earthquake, the 2010 Chilean earthquake of February 27th, 2010.
