It changes and many different scientists have different opinions, since the total number of species (including bacteria) cannot be precisely determined. One estimate is that from 25 to 150 species of animals become extinct every day. Most if not all are microorganisms replaced by species with greater survivability.

around 35-150 species is the estimate. This is largely in rainforests due to deforestation and is only an estimate because it is reckoned that many of the species becoming extinct we haven't even discovered.

Nobody knows for sure, because we don't know how many different species of insects, birds, fish and animals there are.

There are many causes of extinction:

  • deforestation
  • Loss of habitat,
  • climate change,
  • breaks in the food web,
  • introduction of exotic species etc.

Rate of extinction:

  • Experts calculate that between 0.01 and 0.1% of all species will become extinct each year.
  • If there are around 2 million different species on our planet (low estimate) - then that means between 200 and 2,000 extinctions occur every year.
  • But if there are 100 million different species on our planet high estimate) - then between 10,000 and 100,000 species are becoming extinct each year.

No-one will be drawn on actual figures, and what figures are available tend to speak of species, not just animals. Current estimates suggest that species are becoming extinct at 100 to 1000 times faster than would normally happen as part of natural evolution and changes on the planet. Estimates of around 1000 species a week becoming extinct are common but this is only an estimate as it has long been appreciated that many species have and will become extinct before they are even known to science, especially insects.

Well one species goes extinct every 15 seconds, so that means 4 every minute, 240 every hour, and 5760 every day. Wow. That's bad news.

What needs to be done about it?

All endangered and vulnerable species need to be protected. If not they will become extinct. Each animal plays an important role in biodiversity, so it is our duty as the smarter species to protect those that are endangered.

Why do animals have reproduction?

Well to keep the species alive obviously, If they did not the animal would become extinct. We are animals and when someone does have sex it is generally when they love each other and want to have a family.

How many species go extinct every year?

How may animals become extinct each year?

It is estimated that 27,000 species become extinct each year, about 3 an hour. Since 1996, scientists calculated that 124 types of amphibians, 1,108 types of birds, 734 types of fish, 1,096 types of mammals, and 253 types of reptiles became endangered.

How can you help these animals from becoming extinct?

By Breeding them. Bring them in an isolated area with plenty of food and water. Each area has a male type an animal and a female type , of the same animal the male is. Breeding is the best way to make an endangered species to re-populate any species.

What is the process of extinction?

The effects of animal extinction are felt by the environment for years. All plants and animals of a particular ecosystem work together to keep things leveled out. When an animal becomes extinct, it affect the food web and how the remaining plants and animals depend on each other.

How many animals have become extinct?

Millions, nearly 100 different types and species become extinct each day. Also, more animals have become extinct in human existence than in the entire history of the world. That's 1.6 billion years! Hundreds and hundreds of millions of years with actual animals.
