How many animals get adopted from a shelter and end up getting abused after they have been adopted?

The amount of animals that get adopted and abused after the novelty has worn off is atrocious. Recent studies suggest that around 25% of adopted animals get abused. Personally i think that is way too much!

∙ 13y agoYes, most dogs found in animal shelters have been abandoned; some of them have also been abused. The shelter should do a behavorial exam of the dog before offering it for adoption to see if there are any quirks or learned reactions that could cause a problem for the dog in its new home (food aggression, fear of males or females, aggressive towards children, etc.).
There are a large number of dogs in shelters that were abandoned at the shelter by their owners for good reasons - can't afford to care for the animal, had to move someplace that didn't allow dogs, etc. These animals are great for a new home and will likely adapt quickly, so check with the local shelters about the history of an animal.
You can find many good dogs, already house-trained and ready for a new home, at your local shelter. These animals have often been spayed/neutered, vaccinated and treated for worms and any other condition they may have. I strongly suggest looking at your local shelter if you are considering adopting a dog.
