There are just 67 deaths by sharks in the whole world. Often the shark may see a flash of white (a person's leg or arm) and mistake it for a fish. Sometimes people in dark wet suits are mistaken for seals. Many sharks are simply curious like dolphins, but since dolphins are of no threat and love to play with humans, the shark is menacing looking and the blame has been laid by scientists on the movie JAWS.

1,000 people in the world drown for every shark attack or shark related death. Believe it or not (by scientists studies) for every 60 bites from a shark there are 25% of New Yorkers that bite each other!

Much of the blame for a frenzy of sharks coming closer into shores of beaches is blamed on 'baiters' for tour boats. They throw out blood and entrails of fish to entice the sharks just so the folks on the tour boats can see a real live shark. One shouldn't play with mother nature!!! Now surfers and other beach goers are blaming these shark tours for more sharks sticking closer to shores of beaches.

I've read many stories where a shark has been curious over a human and circles them. They may come close and all it takes is a punch on the end of their nose or a poke in the eye if the person in the waters feels the shark is getting too close and generally the shark will leave. If there is a feeding frenzy going on with sharks with a large group of fish a diver may get mixed up in the whole thing and be bitten or chewed to death.

Sharks are one of the oldest creatures besides the Blue Whale in the world. It would be a terrible thing if people were so ignorant they didn't educate themselves on sharks and realize they help clean up our oceans and have a reason for being there. Like any animal that is wild, one should learn about them, respect their turf and coincide with nature. If people persist on taking chances or not reading signs that are apparent on many beaches of shark warnings then they pretty much get what they deserve. Many of the people who have reported shark attacks have actually been divers and some surfers.

I agree with baiting for sharks and that they cause an imbalance of nature bringing the shark closer to crowded beaches or Coastlines.

Should we kill sharks? No! We are the interlopers in their turf and we should respect the warnings.

Barely any many compared to other sharks. There are no accurate numbers available but the White shark population is significantly higher than once thought. Original estimates were inaccurate and made when scientists didn't know much about their behavior. I would like to see an up to date estimate as well. Most of the sharks killed tend to be smaller sharks used for shark fin soup, which is unfortunate because they are not typically harmful to humans anyways.

Around 70 million sharks are killed by people every year, the same as around the whole of the UK being killed every year. The main reason for sharks being killed by people is for "shark fin soup" which is a delicacy in some parts of the world. The fin does not add to the taste at all it is purely for the texture. I think that turning sharks into soup is just very cruel and rather disturbing. In contrast, only around 1 person is killed by a shark every year.
