That's a question that's impossible to answer, because, by definition, you could not run the scenario in which the atom bombs were not dropped. The American military authourities considered a possible million-death scenario to defeat Japan if the bombs wwere not to be dropped.

Okinawa was the only Japanese land that had the bloodiest battle of the Pacific Theater. The allies bombed Japan many times and the Airmen had to fight in the air over Japan. The two Atom bombs dropped on Japan went unchallenged.
