They fought many battles, some as allies, some as opponents. Warfare between Greek city-states was incessant. One lot was the Peloponnesian War which lasted 27 years which involved sieges and land and sea battles. Mid-war, in 410 BCE the Athenian fleet defeated the Spartan-led fleet at Cyzicus. Near the end of the war in 405 BCE the Peloponnesian fleet led by Sparta captured the Athenian fleet at Aigospotamai on the Gallipoli Peninsula. As a result Athens lost the war.
