Most 97 3.5 Liter engines are three bolts (10MM) I believe. I have heard some late model 97 3.5 Liter engines had a four bolt water pump. You would need to remove the front timing cover to verify which yours is. Hope this answers your question.
How do I change the oil pan gasket on a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with 3.5 engine, what is the proper torque for the bolts.
There are three bolts. 10mm socket
the water pump is driven by the timing belt.
inside the front of the engine, driven by the timing belt
Where can I get a diagram of a 1996 Dodge Intrepid cooling system?
If you have a 3.5 liter motor, take it to an independent shop, I would not recommend it for d-i-y ers.
it is burning it!!
From what I understand, it's not easy. It requires pulling the engine on the 2.7 liter model. Georgia "Book" labor is 7.8 hours for exchanging a water pump on this car for this reason.

Did you check for a leak?
