He had four sons, Sam Houston, Jr., Andrew Jackson, William and Temple Lea.

Sam Junior became a Confederate soldier and became a Prisoner of War after the Battle of Shiloh. He became a doctor and practiced in Texas and later became an author. He died in 1894.

Andrew Jackson Houston served in the Spanish American War, as a United States Marshall and from 1924 to 1941 as the Superintendent of the San Jacinto Battlefield. In 1941 at the age of 87 he was appointed to the US Senate. He died two months later.

William spent his adult life as an Army Officer in the Indian Service in the Department of the Interior. He died of an apparent heart attack in 1920 near Hugo, Oklahoma while riding out to visit a reservation.

Temple Lea graduated from Baylor in 1878, and then spent a year at Texas A&M. He was admitted to the Bar and became the District Attorney of the Panhandle District of Texas. He served two terms as a Texas State Senator and was well known for his oratory and colorful style in the defense of murderers. cattle rustlers and horse thieves. His most famous closing argument was the Soiled Dove defense of a prostitute in Woodward, Oklahoma where he died in 1905.
