I understand that in order to GAIN a pound it requires 3500 calories of unspent energy in the body. Therefore, to LOSE a pound you'll need to burn off 3500 calories, or 500 calories a day to lose a pound in a week. I wouldn't focus on calorie consumption as much as I would on burning an extra 500 calories a day.

The number of calories per day for a 17-year-old girl or boy depends on such things as body weight, health, and level of activity. It also depends on whether the 17-year-old needs to:

  • lose weight
  • maintain weight
  • gain weight

If your a man then 2500 calories.

If your a woman 2000.

I would add though, that a smaller sized person would need less, say 2000 for a smaller man and 1500 for a smaller woman.
