According to USDA statistics of American cattle herds in 2010-11, calves less than 500 lbs lost to predators and non-predatory causes numbered at 2.26 million head (Cattle deaths [those weighing more than 500 lbs] numbered at 1.73 million head). Two hundred twenty thousand cattle and calves were killed by predators, majority being coyotes and dogs. Under four million head (or 3.77 million head, to be exact) cattle and calves died from non-predator causes, respiratory disease being the leading cause followed by digestive problems (commonly seen as scours in calves or bloating and acidosis in cattle).
