King William the I (William the conqueror) didn't build all his castles out of stone. In fact, most of the castles he built were made out of wood. These wooden castles were called Motte and Bailey castles. The castles that hedid build out of stone were called Stone Keep Castles (Stone Castles). King William built the Stone Keep Castles out of stone because stone is stronger than wood, doesn't rot within a few years and doesn't burn easily.

William the Conqueror from Normandy invaded Britain and became king, Normans built many motte and bailey castles as well as the infamous Tower of London. The were originally from Normandy, the area just before Brittany, the panhandle on the northern coast, and im sure they built castles there.
Stone Keep castles (Stone castles) are quite a few centuries old. They were built in the 11th century by King William I (William the conqueror) not long after he took over Britain after the battle of hastings. Stone castles however, weren't the first castles William built in Britain. He first built Motte and Bailey castles. The reasons for this were that they were cheap and easy to build as they were made out of wood. He decided to build Stone castles to replace many of the Motte and Bailey castles for many reasons including these: * Stone castles don't burn * Stone castles don't rot within a few years but will carry on standing for centuries to come * Stone castles were heavier, making them much stronger
he built as many as he could so that his soilders where safe and manly his self

Stone or square keep castles were first built in Medieval England by William the Conqueror. Stone keep castles were the natural extension of motte and bailey castles. Motte and bailey castles were only temporary features (though many mottes exist to this day) while stone keep castles were built to last. King William I would have got his barons to build motte and bailey castles all around England. He built the castles because there were so many rebellions. All the peasents didn't like that King William had killed their former King to gain the throne. If the peasents triedd to do anything out of line, they would get killed by the many soldiers
None. In ancient times no castles were built, but there were forts and fortresses.
