The first TV's only had a VHF tuner. Since radio used up the frequencies allocated to TV channel one, TV's started out with channel two and went up to channel thirteen. It wasn't until several years later that the UHF band was added (Channels 14 through 83) and when they did that, channel thirteen was dropped from the VHF band and used for the UHF to VHF conversion.
The word "dial" has one syllable.
There was a knob (or handle or dial) on the set that changed the channels as you turned it. Often there were 2 knobs: One that had VHF channels 2-13 and "UHF", and when you set it at UHF then you could use the second knob to change UHF channels 14 to about 83 (I think). These were and still are standard antenna broadcast channels. Channels with higher numbers (84 to the hundreds and thousands) are cable / satellite channels only... These knobs on early sets changed a "mechanical" switch that set the TV to receive a particular channel. It went "click-click-click" as it was turned. They will still work. Newer TVs have electronic channel selectors, usually controlled by a remote device, and also often have buttons right on the set that will also electronically select the channels.
There was a channel 1 on old American TVs. It was found in the VHF spectrum. However in 1948, the channels frequency range was reallocated by the FCC since it was found to be hard to use.
One can purchase VHF two way radios from many places. Examples of such places are Dino Direct, Pirates Cave, DH Gate, Merit Line, and Digital 2 Way Radios.

"Air" typically refers to broadcasts that are "on air" using VHF or UHF terrestrial signals. These are the signals that are received with an antenna on the roof of houses. Today, terrestrial channels are almost all digital in most Western countries. The term is not a precise one but generally refers to signals that are not delivered via cable or satellite platforms.
