Great Expectations was published in All the Year Round in 36 weekly parts beginning in December 1860. The following year, after the story's completion in All the Year Round , publsihers Chapman and Hall released it as book form in three separate volumes.
There have been many versions of Great Expectations in the past; some TV episodes and some feature films. David Lean's version of it 1946 is said to be the best so far. In the 1990s a copy was made of the novel starring Gweneth Paltrow and it was set in modern times. This is said to be the worst version ever made and a disgrace to the book. Again, in 1998, the BBC made a 3 episode version and that was said to be good and the version most true to the book. More recently, over Christmas (2011), the BBC made another version which also, wasn't good. It starred Gillian Anderson, Douglas Booth, Vanessa Kirby and others. Mike Newell is directing a version which is coming out for a cinema release in autumn 2012. This has a fantastic cast including War Horse's Jeremy Irvine as Pip, Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham and Ralph Fiennes as Magwich. People think this will be the best Great Expectations so far. There have been lots of Great Expectations made over the years, some good and some bad. It is harder to create a good film as you have little screen time to play with and a lot of film version miss out a few characters.
