The Election Commission created by Congress on the 29th of January 1877 to settle the election disputes in Louisiana, Florida and South Carolina did not complete their work until the 2nd of March, just 2 days before Inauguration Day.

It was the 12th of December 2000 when the U.S. Supreme Court decided that the recounts that had started in Florida were a violation of the Constitution's Equal Protection Clause. That was 6 days before the electoral college cast their votes on the 18th of December, 9 days before George W. Bush resigned as Governor of Texas on the 21st of December (the only time I ever saw him cry), 25 days before the official counting of the electoral votes on the 6th of January, and 39 days before Inauguration Day, the 20th of January.
