1 in 100,000 The USPA (US Parachute Association) publishes statistics every year. The average is about 30. Back in the old days, "When sex was safe and skydiving was dangerous", the average was the same, but most were deaths from poor training and equipment malfunctions. Most deaths were also with short-timers - those with few jumps or new to the sport. Now, most of the deaths are from mid-air collisions and landing errors with high-performance parachutes. For example, making a turn close to the ground can be fatal. Many deaths these days are highly experienced jumpers with 1,000's of jumps.
