Domesticated prehistorically and cultivated 7,000 years ago, cotton now has four commercially grown species: Gossypium hirsutum, Gossypium barbadense, Gossypium arboreum, and Gossypium herbaceum.

Cotton comes in several types, depending on the way it is grown or processed. There are three grades of processed cotton, low, medium and high. The lower grades are used for mass produced items, and the higher grades are better for the high quality, luxurious, soft products. There is also an organic grade made from cotton grown with no pesticides or fertilizers.

In cotton fabrics, you can find mixed cotton blends, as well.

Since cotton is available all over the world, the types of fabrics is unlimited. You will find silk-like fine cotton, and the opposite, very rough, heavy cotton canvas. It is used to make Levi's jeans, and the finest lingerie. Cotton is used in flannel baby clothes, and to make furniture upholstery. The weave of the fabric, and the thickness of the thread or yarn varies for each product. You can find very fine, soft, yet tough bedding, and the stronger, corded fabric used for pants.

There are four main types of raw cotton; namely American Upland, Egyptian, Sea Island and Asiatic. From these plants, cotton is processed into an almost endless variety of fabrics.
